What is a .tar.gz file?

A TAR bundle of files compressed with gzip, common for software and backups. TGZ is the same thing.

Why does opening a big .tar.gz take a moment?

The file list is spread through the whole compressed stream, so it is read once to list and once to extract.

Can it open a plain .gz file?

Yes. A single .gz, .bz2, .xz or .zst file opens as one file with its original name when the file stores it.
